Overview of Conference and Winnipeg Area

The Local Organizing Committee is excited to invite you to a joint annual meeting of CSEE and CBA to be held over four days at the RBC Convention Centre in downtown Winnipeg. Stay at hotels with discounted conference rates, including budget-friendly prices, within a 10-minute walk or bus to the Convention Centre. We expect over 500 delegates, with the first day devoted to workshops and field trips, followed by 3 days showcasing 4 plenary presentations, 7 concurrent symposia or contributed paper sessions, two evening poster sessions, and social events at several Winnipeg attractions.We encourage individuals from traditionally under-represented groups and those working outside academia to attend, and we are making childcare arrangements at the Convention Centre itself to promote participation of delegates with children.

Consider arriving early or staying late to explore the city and province. This includes organized fieldtrips in and outside of Winnipeg, including to the Spirit Sands, a desert-like expanse of sand dunes in southwestern Manitoba’s Spruce Woods Provincial Park, or to Brokenhead Wetland Interpretive Trail, a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk through boreal forest anda fen wetland with many of Manitoba’s orchid and carnivorous plant species. Field trips can also include tours of Journey to Churchill at the Assiniboine Park Zoo and the newly opened The Leaf – Canada’s Diversity Gardens, tours that will be led by Assiniboine Park Zoo Conservation and Research staff, and a tour of the Manitoba Museum, including the new Prairies Gallery, Boreal Forest Gallery, and a view of the behind-the-scenes collections. The meeting’s opening reception will take place at the new Qaumajuq contemporary Inuit Art museum, and the public plenary will be at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Conference delegates can access both museums throughout the week (Jun 9-16) at a discounted rate Spend your down-time at an array of foodie worthy restaurants, coffee shops, and brew pubs, with a wide choice of music clubs and post-pandemic patios downtown and in the historic Exchange District. Don’t miss The Forks, a meeting place for over 6,000 years at the junction of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers that is alive with Indigenous culture and history, and where you can meet your colleagues at The Common, an indoor-outdoor plaza with food and brew options. Wrap up the conference (June 14, evening) with new and old friends, dinner, and music at le patio 340 in Winnipeg’s French quarter. Jazz lovers take note: the week-long Winnipeg Jazz Festival starts June 14 and includes free outdoor concerts.
