We are excited to announce that Ça Claque!, a Franco-Manitobain and Métis band that plays traditional and contemporary music, accompanied by dancers, will perform at the Closing Soirée. Feel free to bring a companion and the kids. Le Patio 340 is a relaxed outdoor setting, with seating options from picnic tables to the ground, and room for kids to play. There is even a horseshoe pit, for kids of all ages.

If you did not register for the Soirée previously, you can use this form to indicate your interest now! https://forms.gle/xhWUzMkH8eMvX25J8

Here is a few seconds of Ça Claque!, taken during Festival Du Voyageur this February.

Next up: food! Here is Delezia and Bruce, two members of the LOC, hard at work to find the most perfect food for the Soirée! It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it! Stay tuned later this week for the big reveal about who will be catering the event.

By popular demand, and because all ‘Peggers like a good discount, we are extending the Paper Submission and Early-Registration fee period until Monday, April 10th (11:59 CT) for the annual joint meeting of Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution and the Canadian Botanical Association (11-14 June 2023 in Winnipeg MB).

Given strong demand for podium presentations, we encourage everyone who has not yet submitted a paper to request a lightning talk or a poster presentation, and we especially encourage CBA and CSEE students who are interested in participating in the student paper award competitions.

When registering for the conference, we strongly recommend obtaining a ticket for the opening reception at the WAG / Qaumajuq Inuit Art Gallery (free), the Public Plenary at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (free) by Dr. Allyson Menzies on “Prioritizing Indigenous values in environmental monitoring and wildlife conservation”, and the ‘Soirée à Le Patio 340’ with an informal but delicious outdoor (weather permitting) picnic, live auction, CSEE and CBA awards, and a live band or DJ at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain. At $60 for faculty & professionals, and a deeply discounted $35 for students and postdocs, this is an excellent way to spend an evening with old and new friends.

Also, don’t forget to check out the June 11 workshops and field trips!

Other excellent reasons to attend include our comprehensive, science-based COVID-19 policy that has generated rave reviews and the on-site child-minding service that enables your children to have fun while you participate in the meeting! There's no better way to share some amazing science than to place it in the context of a highly enjoyable week.

If you have already registered and want to add an event (the opening reception, Public Plenary, the closing Soirée, a workshop or a field trip) to your registration, email us at beepeg2023@gmail.com

Help us “Keep Winnipeg Weird”

Hello CSEE-CBA attendees interested in child care,

This message is to provide a few preliminary details on the Child Care Service we are planning for CSEE-CBA 2023. We have reserved a large room for child care, accessible via the same hallway as the Convention Centre meeting rooms, with a portion of the room hived off for infant care. We will expand that space if the ages and number of children render it necessary.

We are currently evaluating two proposals we received following a locally distributed Request for Proposals. The lead person in both cases is a trained Early Childhood Educator III who has previously established and supervised child care centres. All hired caregivers will have a Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry clearance. Proponents of both proposals will bring supplies as needed depending on the age of the children (infants, pre-school, or school age children). They will develop and bring supplies for age-appropriate activities including arts and crafts, puppets, games and puzzles, reading, free play, and naptime depending on the age of the children. Parents can drop in during the day and will be required to provide food (we are working on a mechanism to make this as easy as possible). Based on provincial licensing requirements, parents will need to stay in the building and/or take their children if they leave for lunch (the service we are providing is technically called “child-minding”).

If you are interested or potentially interested in having your child(ren) participate in this child-minding program, please let us know by March 31, so that we can ensure that we have suitable space and resources required to offer age-appropriate activities. We will identify a later cut-off date (likely May 1) by which we will need confirmation of children who will utilize the child-minding service.

Let us know by using this form, or send an email to beepeg2023@gmail.com.

We look forward to creating a place where your children will have fun and be safe, allowing parents to engage in this summer's conference!
